Manual Handling Training in Liverpool

Accidents account for more than a third of all incidents reported each year. While fatal manual handling accidents are rare, accidents resulting in a major injury are more common, accounting for more than 10% of the total number of reported manual accidents.

The Most reported manual handling accidents result in over-three-day injury, most commonly a sprain or strain, often of the back. Manual handling injuries can happen anywhere in the workplace – in offices, construction sites, hospitals, farms and in schools.

Manual Handling Training may play a crucial role in increasing awareness of safe manual handling and mitigating associated risks. However, to ensure safe manual handling, it is imperative to first establish manual handling operations that are reasonably practicable. Additionally, it is important to monitor and review procedures on a regular basis to ensure that workers comprehend and apply them effectively.

Training should be relevant to the type of work carried out and should cover:

  • manual handling risk factors and how injuries can happen
  • how to use mechanical aids
  • how to carry out safe manual handling, including good handling techniques
  • systems of work relevant to the worker’s tasks and environment
  • practical work so the trainer can identify anything the trainee is not doing safely and put it right

The content of any training in good handling techniques should be tailored to the tasks the workers carry out.

Basically, there is no industry, in the retail or education sector that is exempt from injuries sustained from poor manual handling activities. These injuries can result from awkward postures, heavy manual labour, or manual materials handling, all risk factors in developing MSDs.

In previous years, manual handling training consisted of learners demonstrating the proper way to lift a box to obtain their manual handling certificate. However, this approach led to overconfidence and a false belief in candidates that they were fully trained in physical manual handling techniques.
