Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, 2002, every business needs a COSHH assessment, and if the business employs five or more employees, the assessment needs to be documented.
If the business is small, then a nominated, competent person will need to write the assessment. If the business is large, then each department will need an assessment.

What does COSHH cover?
The COSHH training covers substances that are hazardous to health. Substances can take many forms and include:
- Products containing chemicals
- Gases and asphyxiating gases and
- Biological agents (germs). If the packaging has any of the hazard symbols then it is classed as a hazardous substance.
- Germs that cause diseases such as leptospirosis or legionnaires disease and germs used in laboratories.
A COSHH risk assessment should be revisited to ensure that it is kept up to date and an employer should do this regularly. The date of the first review and the length of time between successive reviews will depend on type of risk, the work, and the employers judgement on the likelihood of changes occurring.
