Liverpool could not be better placed right now for the challenges and changes in the industry sector across Liverpool and the North West. The signs are evident, and the predictions are that Liverpool is already signposted as the Northern economic powerhouse.
The present demands and projects signed off in the region’s construction market could lead to almost 20,000 new jobs over the next five years. That is according to forecasts from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
The housing sector is holding very strong with indications that there will be a skills shortage to meet the construction requirements. The planned work on the new Mersey Gateway Bridge will require a significant number of skilled workers each year in Liverpool.
The Mersey Gateway Project is a major scheme to build a new six-lane toll bridge over the River Mersey. It will link the towns of Runcorn and Widnes and will relieve the congested and ageing Silver Jubilee Bridge.
The project will bring huge estimated benefits for people and businesses in Halton, the Liverpool city region, Cheshire and across the North West. We are already seeing the early impact of the plans with new investment coming to Halton on both sides of the river.
CITB calls for continued commitment from all parties
Since January 2015, Liverpool Training Solutions has already secured ‘CITB Health and Safety courses’ for over 200 individuals entering the Construction industry who require the Green Labourers card.
“We do feel we are contributing to the resurgence in the region’s construction requirements and provide good advice such as how do I apply for my green labourers card for anyone entering the Building and Construction industry for the first time.”
However, the industry sector’s recovery is threatened by a widening skills gap, and CITB is urging tradespeople who left the industry during the downturn to return and take advantage of the increasing opportunities in the sector. The CITB is working with industry to attract the next generation of workers and encourage skilled tradespeople who left the industry in the recession to return.
