Should all nursery staff be trained in Paediatric First Aid

Should all nursery staff be trained in Paediatric First AidShould all nursery staff be trained in Paediatric First Aid? Following an e-petition signed by over 100,000 people and delivered to Downing Street, parliament has promised to roll out new guidance for paediatric first aid training for Child Care staff and Nursery staff.

The e-petition was in response to the tragic death of 9 Month old Millie Thompson, who while in the care of her local Nursery choked to death. This incident supported by the e-petition has forged the way forward to the Westminster debate on making first aid training compulsory for all child care and nursery staff.

Should all nursery staff be trained in Paediatric First Aid – Present Paediatric First Aid requirements

At present the statutory requirements of Ofsted and the Early Years Foundation Stage, outline that there must always be at least one member of staff on the premises or on outings who hold an up-to-date full 12 hour Paediatric First Aid certificate. If the new guidance for paediatric first aid training is approved then it would mean that all of the staff must hold the Paediatric First Aid award certificate.

If the law was changed this would require changes and amendments to the Early Years Foundation stage, which is the framework document for nurseries.

At present the 2 Day Paediatric First Aid course meets the criteria defined for first aid training in the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework (EYFS) and Ofsted first aid requirements for registered childminders. It can also be used as evidence for employees working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education. Once completed the certification is valid for 3 Years.
