The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is urging school leavers in the Liverpool area to apply for construction apprenticeships for a rewarding career in the industry.

Hugh Baird College is one of more than 200 across the country which is contracted with CITB to work in partnership to deliver its ‘gold standard’ apprenticeships.

The timings for the request could not have come at a better time in Liverpool. Construction and building plans are moving ahead and leaving austerity measures well behind.

City leaders predicted £1.5bn worth of regeneration proposals with a range of schemes across the City with an estimated creation of 12,000 construction jobs.

As well as an Olympic-standard ice rink on Kings Dock, the proposals also include ambitious plans for Lime Street and Mount Pleasant. At Kings Dock the council is planning the new ice rink alongside an extreme sports complex, quality restaurants and family homes.

Liverpool Football Club has now been given the go ahead for the Anfield stadium expansion.  The five-time European champions’ £100m project can go ahead after they completed the purchase of the final house which will need to be cleared in order to make way for the expansion. The work is expected to be completed in time for the 2016-17 season, which will significantly enhance the club’s revenues.

Development plans for the ABC Cinema in Lime Street given the go ahead  The old ABC cinema in Lime Street has been empty for a number of years and there are plans to have it transformed under the plans. These plans include TV studios and a music venue. In the same location the former Futurist cinema has plans passed that will convert the old cinema into a hotel. In addition further bolt on development includes accommodation for mature students, a cinema and restaurants.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Anderson said he was hopeful a campaign to bring the HS2 high-speed railway line to Liverpool would be successful and that facilities for the rail link would be included in the redevelopment.

CSCS Green Card – Changes to the Green Card from 1st July 2014

The first step for anyone considering a career in the construction sector is to apply for their green card. If you work in a labouring occupation you can take the Site Safety Plus route when applying for the new Green Labourer Card. You will need to provide evidence that you have achieved Level 1 Award Site Safety Plus Heath and Safety Awareness Course.

You must also pass the CITB operatives Health, Safety and Environment test within two years prior of applying for a new card. More information on the CSCS Green Card.
