CITB Site Managers Safety Training – Introduction
CITB Site Managers Safety Training – This is the Construction and building health and safety course which has been designed for site managers, project managers and senior supervisors, as well as managers of smaller companies.
This SMSTS course will provide attendees with the knowledge required to comply with legislation and regulations regarding a construction site, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Holders of the CITB SMSTS qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site and project management.
The course which is delivered in Liverpool is a highly interactive course, involving case studies, classroom discussion, group work and individual/group presentations.
CITB Site Managers Safety Training – Who should attend
This nationally recognised five-day course is designed specifically for those requiring a broad-based knowledge of health and safety in the construction sector. Site management and Supervisors will find the course invaluable in helping them manage the health and safety aspects of construction or civil engineering projects effectively. The ConstructionSkills Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) covers all relevant legislation and is particularly suitable for:
- Construction site managers.
- Agents and quantity surveyors.
- Construction directors and project directors.
- Anyone responsible for planning, organising, monitoring and administering groups of construction staff.
5 Days – The SMSTS course is delivered over five consecutive days. Delegates must complete the 5 days to meet the SMSTS award.
There are no formal qualifications required to attend the 5 day SMSTS course however experience within the construction environment is recommended.

CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme SMSTS – Course Content:
This course covers all legislation relating to construction and focuses on aspects of Health and Safety which have a direct impact on the safe working in the construction, building and civil engineering industries. The course will give the delegates the skills and knowledge to carry out a risk assessment in the workplace. The course will also focus on the implementation of specific control measures and good communication to maintain a Health & Safety culture among the workforce. Course content includes:
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
- Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2007
- Risk assessments/method statements
- Reporting of Accidents, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences
- Recent changes in accepted working practices
- Behavioural safety

CITB Site Managers Safety Training – Assessment and Certification:
The ConstructionSkills Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course is assessed by a short multiple-choice exam; three exercises and a case study; and a tutor review. The tutor review may include short-answer tests, oral questions and answers, simulated practical exercises, role-play and problem-solving activities.
Assessment is undertaken during the course. Successful candidates are awarded a CITB certificate.
